Learning to Assist Hands-On in the Yoga Class

Our adjustment workshops are all about giving you the tools to create a safer, more personalized, and transformative experience for your students. By fine-tuning your hands-on adjustment skills, you’ll be better equipped to meet each student’s unique needs, helping them find the correct alignment and ease in their asanas. This not only prevents injuries but also deepens their practice, boosting their flexibility, strength, and mindfulness.

With a sharper eye for spotting subtle errors and limitations, you’ll be able to offer more effective verbal cues and hands-on guidance, making your classes more inclusive and supportive.

Ultimately, these skills will help you inspire confidence and growth in your students, making their yoga journey—and yours—even more rewarding.

Prerequisites

Completion of the Sivananda Yoga Teachers’ Training Course.

Graduates of other teacher trainings: please contact tyrol@sivananda.net (for courses in Austria) or orleans@sivananda.net (for courses in France) regarding eligibility.

Topics & Curriculum

The ancient texts on Hatha Yoga make no mention of the order in which the asanas are to be practised, nor which adjustments are to be applied. Possibly these aspects were developed directly in the moment during the yoga class. Swami Vishnudevananda was a brilliant example of this tradition.

These adjustment workshops for yoga teachers were devised during a three-week retreat of senior instructors of the Sivananda Yoga Ashrams and Centres.

Focus on asana corrections for typical students’ errors or limitations:

Typical beginner mistakes:

  • Developing appropriate verbal instructions to correct these mistakes
  • Additional physical corrections to the extent necessary

Typical beginner limitations:

  • Training observational skills to recognise lack of mobility, muscle length and muscle strength
  • How to help students to accept these limitations and cope with them better

Preparatory variations or exercises:

  • Individual guidance of the student according to his/her needs

Making progress in the basic pose:

  • Verbal instruction and physical support to improve muscle length, muscle strength and mobility

Improving the basic pose through advanced variations:

  • Developing advanced variations for a deeper experience of the basic pose.
