Half Spinal Twist

Half Spinal Twist: A seated twist for spinal flexibility and balance.

Half Spinal Twist or Ardha Matsyendrasana is a seated twisting posture that brings balance, strength, and flexibility to the spine. After the body has moved through forward bends and backward bends, this asana completes the range of spinal movement by adding lateral rotation. It helps keep the spine elastic, tones the back and spinal nerves, and refreshes the whole body through steady, mindful movement.

Named after the great yogic sage Matsyendranath, this posture develops both physical alignment and inner awareness. The pose may appear intricate at first, but it is built step by step through an upright spine, open chest, steady breathing, and patient concentration. Practised on both sides, it brings symmetry to the body and balance to the nervous system.

Because twisting is not a movement we often explore fully in daily life, Half Spinal Twist also encourages mental adaptability. As the spine lengthens and rotates without strain, the mind learns to remain calm, focused, and flexible.
