Sivananda Yoga is a holistic approach to life that brings body, mind, and spirit into better balance. Sivananda Yoga comes from the teachings of Swami Sivananda, one of the great yoga masters of the 20th century. Trained originally as a doctor, he dedicated his life to relieving human suffering and sharing the wisdom of yoga in a clear, practical, and universal way. His vision of spiritual life was expressed in six simple words: “Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realize.”
Swami Sivananda taught a synthesis of the main paths of yoga, showing that human beings develop best when action, devotion, inquiry, and meditation are all cultivated together. He expressed profound teachings in simple language and opened the door to yoga for people from all walks of life.
Swami Vishnudevananda, a close disciple of Swami Sivananda, brought these teachings to the West and helped make yoga accessible to people living ordinary lives in the world. Under the motto “clarify and simplify”, he taught yoga through five basic principles in a clear, structured way.
He founded the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and created places where students could learn yoga as a complete path of body, mind, and spirit. In 1969, he established the first yoga teacher training course in the West, helping to pass these teachings on to generations of teachers worldwide. He also carried the message of yoga beyond the classroom through peace missions inspired by the ideal of harmony among peoples and nations.
Sivananda Yoga is based on the understanding that true well-being is more than physical fitness. Health is supported when the whole person is cared for: the body is exercised, the breath is regulated, the mind is calmed, the heart is uplifted, and life is lived with greater awareness.
This approach recognizes that physical tension and mental tension are deeply connected. When the body relaxes, the mind can begin to relax. When the breath becomes steady, the mind becomes clearer. When thoughts become more positive, meditation deepens. Through regular practice, yoga becomes a means of inner transformation as well as outer balance.
Swami Vishnudevananda presented the teachings in five simple principles that can be integrated into everyday life.

Asanas help keep the body strong, flexible, and balanced. They work especially on the spine and nervous system, improve circulation, support the organs, and develop steadiness and concentration.

Pranayama strengthens and revitalizes body and mind by regulating the breath and increasing the flow of vital energy. Conscious breathing helps restore clarity, vitality, and emotional balance.

Deep relaxation allows the body and mind to recharge. It releases unnecessary tension, conserves energy, and helps restore a natural state of ease, peace, and renewal.

A simple, natural, vegetarian diet supports health, clarity, and inner harmony. Food is approached as nourishment for both body and mind, with an emphasis on freshness, moderation, and purity.

Positive thinking helps purify the mind and creates the foundation for meditation. Meditation leads the mind inward, bringing peace, focus, and a direct experience of one’s deeper nature.
Sivananda Yoga embraces the classical synthesis of the four main paths of yoga. Each path supports a different aspect of human nature, and together they create a balanced spiritual life.
Karma Yoga
The path of selfless action. By serving without attachment to reward, the heart is purified and the ego becomes less dominant.
Bhakti Yoga
The path of devotion. Through prayer, mantra, and opening the heart, emotions are transformed into love and surrender.
Jnana Yoga
The path of wisdom and inquiry. Through reflection and discrimination, one seeks to know the true Self beyond body and mind.
Raja Yoga
The path of mental discipline and meditation. Through ethical living, posture, breath control, concentration, and meditation, the mind becomes calm and focused.
In Sivananda Yoga, the postures are important, but they are only one part of a much larger whole. The aim is not simply flexibility or strength, but a life lived with greater awareness, harmony, and inner freedom.
Regular practice can help bring vitality to the body, calm to the mind, openness to the heart, and a clearer sense of purpose. Over time, yoga becomes not just something we do, but something we live.
