Yoga in India

Retreats, pilgrimages and teacher training close to the source of the yoga tradition

India has long drawn people seeking a deeper understanding of yoga. Here, ancient teachings remain present in daily life – in meditation and prayer, in sacred places and in traditions passed down through generations.

The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres offer several ways to experience yoga in India. You can join a retreat in the Himalayas, travel through sacred India on a guided pilgrimage or undertake an intensive period of teacher training and spiritual practice.

Explore the programmes below and find the journey that meets you at this point in your practice.

Yoga Retreats and Spiritual Journeys

Yoga Retreats in the Himalayas

Flexible stay in one location

Step away from everyday routines and enter the steady rhythm of retreat life in Rudraprayag. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, the retreat setting overlooks the sacred Ganges and offers supportive conditions for practice and reflection.

The daily programme includes asanas, pranayama, meditation and Satsang, together with nourishing vegetarian meals. Optional visits to nearby temples offer a glimpse into the spiritual culture of the region.

You can choose the length of your stay within the scheduled retreat periods, making this the most flexible way to experience yoga in India with Sivananda.

Pilgrimage to India

Guided journey through sacred India

A Sivananda Yoga Yatra is an inner journey expressed through outward travel. Guided by swamis and senior teachers, the pilgrimage leads through places associated with India’s sacred rivers, temples and spiritual masters.

Daily yoga practice, meditation and chanting accompany the journey. Time spent in places such as Rudraprayag, Badrinath, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Vrindavan brings the teachings into direct contact with the living traditions of India.

This programme is suited to those who feel drawn to pilgrimage and would like to experience sacred India as part of a guided group.

Teacher Training and Advanced Practice in India

The Sivananda Yoga residential training programmes in Rudraprayag let you immerse yourself fully in the yoga tradition. The structured daily rhythm combines personal practice with study, teaching and spiritual discipline.

Yoga Teachers’ Training Course – TTC

Four-week foundational training

The four-week Teachers’ Training Course provides a broad foundation in classical yoga and prepares participants to teach asanas and pranayama.

Alongside daily practice, the course introduces meditation, yoga philosophy, anatomy and teaching methodology. It is suitable for sincere students who wish to deepen their understanding of yoga, whether or not they already plan to teach.

Advanced Teachers’ Training Course – ATTC

For Sivananda TTC graduates

The four-week Advanced Teachers’ Training Course builds on the foundation of the first course through more advanced practice and a deeper study of yoga philosophy.

The programme is intended for teachers who wish to strengthen their personal sadhana and continue their development within the Sivananda tradition.

Sadhana Intensive

Guided personal practice

The Sadhana Intensive is an advanced residential programme centred on sustained spiritual practice. It offers experienced practitioners the conditions to deepen pranayama, meditation and other classical yogic disciplines under close guidance.

The course is intended for Sivananda TTC graduates who are ready for a concentrated period of personal practice.

Find Your Path to India

Each programme offers a different way to approach the birthplace of yoga. A retreat allows you to enter the practice gradually, while a pilgrimage brings you into contact with sacred places and traditions. The residential training courses offer a more intensive commitment to study and sadhana.
